Hurricane Alex (2004)

    The tropical depression that later became Hurricane Alex formed off the South Carolina coast on July 31. Fed by the warm Gulf Stream waters, the system intensified into the first Atlantic tropical storm of 2004, then later became a hurricane. As it approached Cape Hatteras, Alex strengthened to Category 2. The eyewall moved over Cape Hatteras causing some damage.

Highest wind gust reported:                      102 mph         Hatteras Village (report from the public)

Lowest sea level pressure reported:        990.7 mb        Diamond Shoals (41025)    * Last report before instrument failed

Highest storm surge estimated:                 ~6 feet           Significant soundside surges in Buxton and Ocracoke Island

Highest rainfall total:                                      7.55"             Ocracoke (OCRN7)

Deaths:                                                                                  None reported
