Past Trips

So where in the world have I been?

The purpose of this page is to help me remember where I've been for my vacations and to share a taste or glimpse of these wonderful and interesting places. Too often, journeys blur into one another until all one is left with is a general feeling that one has been someplace. So here, I seek to portray some of my musings and experiences as a traveler. This is a very long range project which will only be updated incrementally as time permits. Eventually, there should be some interesting travelogues and pictures of some of these trips. Not included are the trips I take to my home in western New York, I generally go home about twice per year (almost always for Christmas, sometimes for Thanksgiving, and sometimes for other events such as the Wellsville Ridgewalk or a summer trip).

Jul 1990 Cruise from Vancouver, BC up through the Inside Passage of Alaska, bus tour in Alaska interior to Denali National Park.

Jun 1992 My first road trip to the Rockies, including South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado.

Jun 1993 Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia.

Jun 1994 Trip to New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana, including Big Bend NP, Guadeloupe Mountains NP, and Carlsbad Caverns NP.

Jun 1995 Tour of Western Europe, including England, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and France.

Aug 1996 Circle tour of Lakes Superior, Huron, and Erie including the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Boundary Waters NP and Isle Royale NP.

Jun 1997 Tour of Great Britain, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Poland, and Germany, as well as Scotland, Wales, and England.

Aug 1997 Ten month stint in the Federated States of Micronesia in Chuuk State, on Moen Island. Passed through California and Hawaii on the way out, my first time ever in those states.

Dec 1997 Visited the US Territory of Guam for Christmas, just a week after Super Typhoon Paka had hit the island.

May 1998 Trip back to the States, stopping on Pohnpei, Kosrae, and passing through Ebeye and Majuro, then spending a week on Hawai'i to get acclimated back to American culture.

Jun 1998 Trip to Montana, Alberta, and British Columbia including the Canadian Rockies including Glacier NP, Banff NP, Jasper NP, and Yoho NP.

May 1999 Trip to California and Oregon, including San Francisco, Crater Lake NP, Yosemite NP, and King's Canyon NP.

Jan 2000 Trip to attend the 2000 Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society in Long Beach, CA.

Feb 2000 Trip to Houston, TX to give a copanel presentation for a conference on Native American studies.

May 2000 A multi-part road trip, first through New England with some friends, then on to Atlantic Canada including New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. -- I finished my quest to visit all 50 US States when we traveled through Maine.

Jun 2000 Trip to Washington DC as part of my SOARS summer experience.

Jul 2000 Camping trip in Yellowstone National Park.

Mar 2001 Trip to southern California including San Diego, Los Angeles, Joshua Tree NP, Salton Sea, and Tijuana, Mexico.

May 2001 Trip to Chattanooga, TN for my sister's graduation and a short backpacking trip in the Smokies, including Mount LeConte and Charlie's Bunyon.

Jul 2001 Backpacking on the West Coast Trail, Vancouver Island, along with a quick tour of Washington State including Cascades NP, Mount Rainier NP, and Olympic NP.

Sep 2001 Trip to Black Hills of SD with parents. Visited Badlands NP, Mount Rushmore, and Wind Cave NP. A nice time to visit, as the crowds were small, the trees were turning, and the wildlife was abundant.

Mar 2002 Trip to Banff, Alberta with my mom for a week of skiing at Sunshine and Lake Louise.

Apr 2002 A very sad trip to New Jersey for the funeral of my grandmother.

May 2002 Trip to visit friends and family in Berrien Springs, MI -- also took a day trip to Chicago.

May 2002 Hurricane Conference in San Diego -- a working trip.

Jun 2002 Trip to Chattanooga, TN to attend the wedding of my best friend Michael Campbell to Heidi Olson. My friend Wesley joined me for an epic hike up Mount LeConte.

May 2003 Trip to Atlanta and Calhoun, GA for the wedding of my sister, Andrea Vigh, to Paul Hoover.

Jul 2003 A road trip with my mom through Colorado, the corner of New Mexico, Arizona (including a hike in the Grand Canyon), Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming.

May 2004 Work trip to Miami Beach, FL for the 26th Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology -- visited the Everglades while there.

May 2004 Trip to Pennsylvania for the wedding of my friend, Roland Newman. Also visited my grandfather in New Jersey and 'climbed' the lofty highpoint of Delaware.

June 2004 Trip to Chattanooga, TN for the wedding of my cousin, Christy Gregory. And you guessed it -- my friend Wesley and I made another epic hike up Mount LeConte in what has become an irregular tradition.

Oct 2004 A work trip to Washington, D.C. -- also got to visit my Aunt Drina and do some sightseeing.

Aug 2005 I enjoyed a nearly weeklong vacation in Miami Beach, FL with my parents, sister, and brother-in-law. We spent lots of time enjoying the beach, toured the Everglades, and even visited the National Hurricane Center, all just weeks before Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma put a damper on the summer for South Florida.

Sep 2005 I took a quick trip over Labor Day weekend for the wedding of my friend, Travis Dean.

Oct 2005 In keeping with my annual Fall tradition, I went home to NY for the weekend and ran the Wellsville Ridgewalk.

Nov 2005 I took another quick weekend trip to Chattanooga for the wedding of my friend, Wesley Leeds. I hope to post some of those pictures soon.

Dec 2005 I took one of my dream trips: a two week tour of Peru and Bolivia! As time permits, I will be sharing some of my experiences and pictures.
